Late Lunchtime Links: The finance modules of MBA courses are massively out of date
If you're contemplating an MBA, you probably shouldn't be doing it to increase your knowledge of cutting-edge techniques currently used in the financial services industry.
According to a new paper by a professor at the well-respected Indian Institute of Management, the finance curriculum of a typical MBA programme hasn't kept pace with events in the real world for the last decade.
The average MBA programme doesn't teach student sophisticated mathematical and statistical models, doesn't integrate finance theory with other disciplines, doesn't have much to say about market microstructure, and doesn't really address fat tails and systemic risk.
MBA students may be deluded into thinking they are gathering a lot of knowledge about finance. They would be wrong.
