Extra effort key to a successful internship

One of the big banks has accepted your application for a summer internship. As a common practice, you will spend about 10 to 12 weeks with the firm and be exposed to different aspects of its business, culture and work ethics.

But how can you leverage off this internship? How can you stand out from your fellow students and stand the best chance of landing a permanent role when you graduate?

Always go the extra mile

The simplest way to get noticed is to stretch yourself beyond the immediate scope of your internship assignments. For example, get involved in other projects at work.

Banks also value interns who express their opinions. "Over the years, we have seen many outstanding summer associates who bring with them fresh perspectives and ideas to make positive contributions for continuous improvement," says Stella Wong, head of human resources, HSBC Singapore.

But going beyond the call of duty isn't all about office-bound work. Participation in networking and corporate events - including community involvement programmes and voluntary activities - provides opportunities for you to meet and learn from experienced colleagues from across the bank.

"It's encouraging to see enthusiasm and effort even though they are not full-time employees. We leave it to the summer associates to exercise their judgment and discretion but we find that most of them subscribe to the school of thought that one learns most from doing," says Wong.

Top-three internship tips

· Be involved in diverse activities so you can build up your experience and network.

· Clearly articulate your career aspirations and how the bank fits into your long-term plan.

· Be open to other opportunities in the bank. Don't only focus on sectors traditionally taught as part of your university curriculum. There are many diverse careers within a bank, and you may find yourself on a rewarding path if you keep an open mind.
