THE CAMPUS CHRONICLER: Here's where I hear there are still sales and trading internship places

If you're still looking, I'm afraid that most banks have given all their global markets summer internship offers out already. As this site noted earlier this week, most remaining places are in the back and middle office and technology.

However, there is still hope if you want to work in sales and trading. My friends and are I are still interviewing at Citi, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and BNP Paribas.

Campus rumour has it that Citi have made a late decision to significantly increase their global markets intern class this year and as such have quite a few assessment centres remaining. BAML also seem to have spread their assessment centres over a wide range of dates from the beginning of January until mid-March and therefore still have a number of assessment centres left too.

I hear BNP Paribas has filled up most of its summer internship roles, but some of its desks have not yet hired interns, so they're still recruiting.

How can you use this ongoing recruitment to your advantage?

It's not easy. But it certainly is possible.

If you haven't received an internship offer and you haven't been rejected by any of these three banks, I'd suggest you give HR a call, find out what stage your application is at and try and push them to give you an interview.

Pushing doesn't mean being pushy. One candidate I know pushed a UBS recruiter so hard that the recruiter just rejected him there and then, and in no uncertain words told him to leave her alone.

Calling once a week is more than enough, and it helps to try and build a rapport with the recruiters so that when a space in an assessment centre does appear you will be the first one they contact.

What to expect if you make it onto the assessment centres

In my experience, Citi and BAML run rotational internship programmes so their assessment centres are similar to most other banks.

However, BNP Paribas's summer internship programme is desk-based so their interview process differs. HR sends a copy of your CV out to the various desks who are looking to hire a summer intern, and it is up to the desk to select you to interview with them. This means pushing HR at BNP Paribas can only do so much.

However the most hungry amongst could find out from BNP HR which desks are hiring and then use the internet find out someone's email address on that desk and send them a persuasive message.

As far-fetched as this may sound, I know candidates who have done this before at BNP Paribas, Barclays Capital and JP Morgan, all of which use desk-based programmes, and it really does work. So remember there are still internships out there, and it is up to you to go and get them. Good luck!
