The big bonus week: Jan 17th to 21st
Once upon a time, people at Goldman, Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch would be fully conversant numbers by January 1st. Then Goldman and Morgan Stanley changed their fiscal year ends and Merrill Lynch was subsumed by Bank of America. Nowadays, therefore, bonus numbers are a New Year's affair.
This year, the big week for bonus announcements at US banks is likely to be January 17th to 21st.
Goldman's fourth quarter results are scheduled for the 19th, with bonuses expected to be announced around the same date. JPMorgan's fourth quarter call is scheduled for January 14th, but insiders tell us bonuses won't be announced until the 19th. Morgan Stanley hasn't announced a fourth quarter earnings release date yet, but is expected to schedule something for the week starting the 17th too.
Some senior staff may be informed in advance. "I'm expecting a rush of announcements from the 12th January onwards," says one senior headhunter.
"It will start happening next week," predicts Jon Terry, head of the reward and compensation practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers. "Bonuses haven't been significantly delayed by the FSA's new compensation code," he adds.
