FRIDAY'S KILLER QUESTION: Everyone in a group pays 1 to enter the following competition....

Everyone in a group pays 1 to enter the following competition. Each person has to write down secretly on a piece of paper a number from zero to 100 inclusive. Calculate the average of all of these numbers and then take two thirds. The winner, who gets all of the entrance fee, is the person who gets closest to this final number. The players know the rule for determining the winner, and they are not allowed to communicate with each other. What number should you submit?

Answer

This is a famous economics experiment, which examines people's rationality among other things.

If everyone submits the number 50, say, then the winning number would be 33. Perhaps one should submit 33. But if everyone does that the winning number will be 22.

Ok, so submit that number. But if everyone does that... You can see where this leads. The stable point is clearly zero because if everyone submit zero then two thirds of that is still zero, and so zero is the winning number. The winnings get divided among everyone and there was no point in entering in the first place.

In discussions about this problem, people tend to carry through the above argument and either quickly conclude that zero is 'correct' or they stop the inductive process after a couple of iterations and submit something around 20. It may be that the longer people have to think about this, the lower the number they submit.

This is a nice problem because it does divide people into the purely rational, game-theoretic types, who pick zero, and never win, and the more relaxed types, who pick just pick a number after a tiny bit of thought and do stand a chance of winning.

    I pay $1 for the game and should pick at least 1. If the average is 1 (everyone picks 1), then I get my original investment back assuming that winnings are divided between participants.

    This is a nice problem because it does divide people into the purely rational, game-theoretic types, who pick zero, and never win, and the more relaxed types, who pick just pick a number after a tiny bit of thought and do stand a chance of winning.

    Dont you think picking 0 has the same chance of being picked by the relaxed type and so also the same tiny chance of winning . Therefore I disagree with the conclusion that the game th,eorists have less chance than the relaxed types . 0 is also part of the any number logic.

    The answer would very much depend on who the people in the room are! If you get 100 mathematicians who all understand game theory, maybe your final answer will tend to be much lower. And yes, maybe the same for a group of 1,000 financially (relatively) litterate "investment professionals", or graduates applying for banking jobs...

    However, if you take a random sample of the population: Probably at least 70% will say "huh??", i.e. have no clue what you're talking about. maybe a further 20% will get to the first step to realise that the random responses will likely average out at 50, a few more may figure out that 2/3rds of 50 is 33. And then maybe a small percentage will figure that the average may trend lower as (only!) some of the others in the room may think they way they do. And there may even be a "genius" or two that guesses "0"(!), which will bring down the average a bit.

    So your final answer will probably be slightly lower than 33. 32 or 31 should be as good a guess as any. What would be really stupid would be to think that EVERYONE in the group will think the same way or come to the same conclusions. The key would be to understand who else is in the group with you.

    Sorry i meant "work out" using excel ... I think the average would be recursively smaller as the target is a 2/3 fraction.

    Ok guys I posted this earlier but it got lost.

    Assuming the players didnt know the rules and were asked to pick a number at random, then using a normal (gaussian) distribution, they would average at about 50. 2/3 would b 33.

    However the players know so I believe 50% would avg at 50, the next 50% at 33 and on and on recursively. Using excel u can work at the weighted avg at 4, so i would got for '3' = 2/3 of 4.
