HSBC salary increases allegedly coming soon
Most banks have increased salaries. HSBC's investment bank hasn't. However, according to various recruiters, it's about to.
"There's been talk of HSBC putting up their salaries for ages, but it hasn't happened," says one. "The rumour now is that they're going to do it this month, and backdate it to the start of the year."
"At the moment, HSBC just can't compete on base salaries," says another headhunter focused in equity research (an area where HSBC is hiring). "But the rumour is they're going to increase them soon."
HSBC didn't return a call for comment.
In a sign that HSBC is prepared to dig deep where necessary, it appears to have bought back David May, its head of research who was said to be leaving for RBC Capital Markets earlier this year, but who's still around.
