My horrible banking internship experience

I worked as an intern for a top tier IB within Sales & Trading.

The previous team had been poached by another bank so the new team were all from a French bank.

The first problem I had, was that as an intern I was keen to learn, but how the hell was I suppose to do that when they always spoke in French with each other? It did my head in listening to them from 7am till 10pm at night.

On my first day, I set up an appointment with the estate agent to help me find accommodation to rent. But when I asked to leave at around 8pm the Associate said that if I wanted a job I would have to stay till late. Then the VP had a go at me for being to slow in finding my own accommodation.

I was new to the whole term sheets structure of products etc. Instead of being told the basics, one of the Associates took me in to a room and had a go at me for not knowing how to write a term sheet. Isn't the whole point of an internship to come in and learn?

But I eventually lost it when that associate laughed in my face when I asked her for help. I flagged all this up with HR, but they took a blind eye. Eventually, I got fed up and handed in my notice.

I am still amazed people keep trying to make it in that dead industry where they're working their ass off, taking the crap from everyone (their team/clients/ pick a prick) 14 hours a day.... the efforts and sacrifices are just so ridiculous to eventually make a 6 figures after 5 years. Not mentionning you'd given up all social life and concept of happiness in the process....... but they think they're following the money.... [sighs] Meanwhile google people are having fun doing their job.

The French students have a different recruitment process to UK students..a French banker will recruit a students from his/her same schools (note: a 'Grande Ecole' is the equivalent of the top universities in the UK). This is because the French degrees have an industry placement element, which counts towards the final grades of their degrees.. So if you are not French and end up in a French team.. well, good luck to you because they are going to make your life a misery..

The French working within Investment Banking are known to be the worse bankers in term of arrogance. The French degrees are tailored for work and not academia; French degrees are more like a professional qualification than a hard-core academic degree such as those found in the UK top Unis. The French bankers are too ignorant and cannot understand why UK students do not know how to do basic accountancy calculations... This makes me laugh as this is a proof of a clear lack of flexibility on their part, which is meant to be a key selection criteria within this industry.. No surprise why Banks were on the brink of collapse!
