The papers are full of the Liberal Democrats' attempts to make headway on one of their election pledges: opening lots of regional stock exchanges. The Sunday Times reported that Vince Cable wants new exchanges everywhere from Glasgow, to Edinburgh and Birmingham. In 1914, it points out that there were 22 regional exchanges, including ones at Bristol, Halifax and Leeds.

If it comes to pass, this could be expected to create a few jobs outside London as banks seek to schmooze regional clients. In reality, it probably won't come to pass though. The Financial Times points out that there's been an online exchange based in Birmingham since 2007. So far, only three companies have listed there. Investors don't like regional exchanges because they lack liquidity.
