There were 164,000 people chasing 2,218 UK investment banking graduate vacancies this year
If you've been wondering why you applied to an investment bank without absolutely zero success, we may have the answer: according to High Fliers Research, there were 75 applications per investment banking graduate place in 2010.
This is the bad news.
There is, however, also some good news.
As the table below (which you will need to click on, and then select 'large' to view properly) shows, investment banks' graduate vacancies are up a massive 37.1% in 2010 compared to 2009. Last year, there 104 applications to every place.

The table also shows that investment banks are by far the best payers, a fact reinforced by the chart below.

Despite this, and despite the 75 people competing to fill every investment banking vacancy, banks aren't exactly growing massively in popularity among UK students. Last year, graduate applications to investment banks rose only 0.7%, less than any other sector except chemicals and pharmaceuticals, where they plummeted.
