Top networking tips from a successful student

In the process of researching our article on the pointless or not of paying someone to help you find a job, we came across a student who explained how he networks with bankers without paying for an expensive middle man.

The five stage process is refreshingly simple, but does require that banks are presenting on your campus to begin with.

1) Attend a campus presentation made by an investment bank.

2) At the end of the presentation, identify the MDs in the room.

3) Walk over to the hoard of students surrounding the MDs in the room.

4) Explain, in a loud voice, that you've got a class to go to, only intend to stay a moment, and need to move to the front of the queue.

5) Once in front of the MD, explain again that you unfortunately have a class to go to, but ask if you can you possibly get their card.

6) Email them and ask if you can set up a brief half hour meeting. Voila.

"It's very easy to network. There's no need to pay for it," the successful student says.

My MD spend 90% of his time arguing on the phone with his ex-wife, and online window shopping for holidays in the Caribbean. MDs have tons of free time.

Make no mistake. This approach would burn more bridges than benefit you. First of all, asking for a card from an MD right there means you're pushing him up the wall and leaves him no choice but to give it to you. Secondly, emailing and the first thing you do is ask him for an hour of his time? Clearly the author has never done this because even analysts won't have an hour for you in the middle of the day.

Get real. It's even smarter to email him without asking for his card. Believe me, it's doable.

You need to know if an MD can get you an internship...

    Hi Henry & all others,

How can you get internships by keeping in touch with the MD? What do you say to him? Surely all hiring has to be done by HR? Do they get you interviews or a straight internship without any recruitment hurdles?

    Many thanks.

This advice is correct. Don't pay a dime to these jokers who claim to get you a 100% guaranteed job or help you to network with people by charging you hundreds of quid.

If you don't know where to get started, read a book on networking and get out to each and every event on campus and start practicing, sooner or later someone will see the ambition in you and be willing to help you out. I secured 2 summer internships at bulge brackets merely from speaking to and staying in touch with MDs I met on campus. Then got a fulltime offer off one of those internships. Simples.

Another tip is simply have somehting useful or interesting to say, about anything but preferably finance related and show lots of ambition to work hard. Don't try to brag about how well you learnt the Black-Scholes derivation or why you think EURUSD is undervalued, noone gives a shit.

    Good luck and god speed.
