Financial cities of the world, ranked according to their living standards

Mercer has produced the latest iteration of its Worldwide Quality of Living Survey, and the implications are clear.

If you intend to combine a career in financial services with life in a pleasant city, go to Switzerland, or possibly Frankfurt. If you are ambivalent about the pleasantness of your environment, go to London or New York. And if you're prepared to tolerate sub par living standards for the sake of career prospects or low taxation, choose Hong Kong, Dubai, Qatar, Shanghai, Mumbai or Moscow.

Mercer measures living standards by assessing '39 factors.' These fall under the general headings of: political and social environment; economic environment; socio-cultural environment; health and sanitation; schools and education; public services and transportation; recreation; consumer goods; housing; and the 'natural environment.'

This is a really odd list - the three largest financial centers are London, New York and Hong Kong - yet none of them seem to fare well in the rankings. And I don't think they take into account the lifestyles of the wealthy (the drivers of the financial markets) in each nation - Hong Kong for example is a city built for the wealthy, whereas a place like Vienna aren't really known for that (really high texes). Neither does this survey take into account rule of law, SIngapore doesn't really have that, it's a one-party state in which the government is the largest cause of homicides (exexutions). Only Hong Kong, London, Chicago and New York have really well developed education systems - world-class ones anyway (for the wealthy) with London probably having the most sophisticated (home to UCL, Imperial College, Kings College, LSE etc).

London has been the centre of the universe for the past 200 years and will remain that way for the next 25 at least.

Not really sure why you would want to be somewhere else, especially if you want to be in finanical services.

Yes there are prettier, less noisy places, go to them when on holiday.

Ah, Sydney. Xanthus is right, except forgets to add that everyone in Australia is a bit of a dick. The tall, pretty and smart girls too. They are all a bit of a dick.

Spent some time in Sydney and it deserves #4

Very pretty place; lots of tall, pretty, and smart girls; food is fesh, cheap and local; restaurants good; pay is good; houses are cheap (relatively); beaches are full of white squeaky sand 20 minutes drive from city; water is blue; Fiji is 4 hours away; vineyards are 2 hours drive away; there's a good golf course 10 minutes from city; the beer is cold; and the sun is hot ....

As "Cold Chisel" used to sing:

'the grass is greener, the girls are sweeter'

@don'tmatter - Dublin is there and Milano isn't because Dubliners know how to spell "ridiculous". Perhaps it would help if you did as well ?
