Goldman Sachs, operations (graduate)

Overall, the application process consisted of several first round interviews, including a 30 minute numeracy test without a calculator, plus a literacy test, plus a final round of three 30 minute interviews.

This is what I was asked:

Question:

Why Goldman Sachs?

Answer:

I said how the success of the firm is very appealing and the fact that they know exactly what they're doing as they came out better off in the recession. Also, that they only employ the best people which makes their culture a major part of their success. I talked about their business principles and how they strive to be the best without arrogance. I mentioned about their social responsibilities as I am a big fan of charity work I liked that they found this so important.

Question:

Why are you interested in a career in investment banking?

Answer:

I find the industry fascinating and want to be a part of this global environment. Talking to friends that are already in the industry has been important in my decision as they have said I would be well suited and from what they talk about their jobs - this is a place I want to be. I am incredibly driven and strive under pressure, I like to be challenged which is why IB seems the perfect choice.

Question:

Tell us about a time where you had to work to a tight deadline but couldn't make it

Answer:

I explained about a time in my degree where we were given three pieces of work by different lecturers which all had the same deadline. I said how I prioritised my work by importance and whether it counted towards my grade. I was then drilled by the interviewers although clearly the answers didn't matter they just wanted to see how well I could cope under pressure.
