REVIEW MY CV : I am highly experienced and perfectly competent, but am getting nowhere

I am currently what is classed as "a statistic" as my VC shop closed doors recently. I have spoken to recruitment agents who have made some suggestions which have been incorporated in my resume, yet I almost without fail get the "we have reviewed this but it is not suitable" spiel.

Given that most of the positions I have applied for fall well within my ambit of technical skills and I think I am also quite competent on my soft skill set, the only conclusion I can draw (apart from the "poor market") is that despite assertions from agents to the contrary, this is a poor resume and my skill set obviously no longer fits into the City.

Anyone care to give me some opinions on the resume and/or on which positions I should focus my searches?. I would prefer something in asset management (PM or APM) or in the PE/VC field. I'd prefer not to be boxed into a purely analytical role.

VC / PE in UK is very much networking. Also, very few UK VC do transatcions under 5M, so few of them will rate the quantum element of your experience.

But I suspect that the key challenge that you face is the UK Economic climate, which for VC is awful. It may also be that the UK VC model is broken. If I were you I would approach family offices, and if you can't find them then you're not well connected enough.

If that doesn't work for you then if you won't change sector move to country with a better future..... RSA springs to mind

Some of the comments made by ppl are pretty stupid. SQL and VB?!? About as useful for a VC/PE as my undergrad thesis on femtochemical reactions.

First thing that struck me was you graduated in 1992 and you're still an Investment Associate?

And anyway what exactly are you? You're clearly been around. You spent 8 years in equity research, followed by a couple of years as a "Business Consultant", a year in something else followed by a few years in VC.

With the competitive market out there it's gonna be a very tough sell for you to compete with those who come from more conventional background. What is it you're targeting VC, PE, asset management- me thinks everything and anything and that seems to be your problem.

How can you compete with, say, a 28 year old who has BB experience followed by couple of years on the buy side? Or for VC, say an engineer with MBA from INSEAD followed by a year or two of doing exactly what you've been doing? Fact is you can't and that is why its not working out.

You need to clarify in your mind exactly what you're targetting, FOCUS again. Finally, your last stint is v descriptive... talk not about what you did but what you achieved.
