What are you expectations for the new year? New job? Bigger bonus? Sizable salary rise? Relocation? Or none of the above?

In overall terms, 2010 looks likely to be a good one for recruitment and employment in the financial sector.

Hiring managers at international banks are predicting a war for talent in certain sectors (compliance, commodities, equities, IT, to name but a few), and vacancy volumes will almost certainly be higher than in 2009.

Recruitment agencies are now rebuilding their banking-sector teams, a sure sign that the hiring outlook is picking up.

That's all well and good at a general level, but how will 2010 turn out for you in your particular job function, at your level of seniority?

I've expected things to turn around but now suddenly find myself in a situation where I get all kinds of issues with hirers. My having taken a voluntary break for the past almost one year is suddenly not in my favour. I find the traditional and conservative mindsets of the typical hirers means they'd go for the typical value-for-money CVs.

my batch got even fewer interviews than the last batch at early 2009, so I donot where the optimism is coming from. I expect a extremely tough situation in 2010 first half.

No more go-go years for the next half a decade.....don't expect the pre-financial tsunami kind of employment patterns...

Equities jobs will definitely be on the up, and candidates should have more employers to choose from. It's time for a bit of revenge after all these months of an employer-led market!
