Lunchtime Links: Meet the 35 year old billionaire natural gas trader

Fortune Magazine has an interesting article about John Arnold, CEO of Houston-based commodities hedge fund Centaurus.

Among other things, it transpires that Arnold has a nervous stutter and drinks lots of water. We also learn that he grew up in Dallas, attended Vanderbilt University, and began his trading career as a trainee at Enron, where he reportedly earned the firm $750m in 2001. When Enron blew up, he moved to UBS, which apparently offered him $8m to stay, but he moved on and set up Centaurus anyhow.

what is 'success'? You have $100,000, then what? You have $1m, then what? You have $1bln, then what? You die, then what?

Would love $1bln.... not sure I would call myself successful in life based on that only... what if you couldnt hold down a relationship? what if you couldnt have kids? what if you sucked as a father/mother? what if you had to buy sex? what if you didnt know who your friends were? what if your partner had terminal cancer? what would you say if god sat next to you on a virgin upper class flight and asked you to summarise your successes in life?...getting silly now but..

The truth is somewhere in the middle as cliche as it may sound....also everything is possible in this life, like getting a good job in Fin without a higher level degree...maybe 20 years ago things were easier!

He is the exception, these days all the big boys hire star students only.

YOU ARE NOT GETTING INTO GOLDMANS WITH JUST YOUR A LEVELS.
