Lunchtime links: Massive jump in financial services job vacancies in August
In terms of financial services recruitment, August is typically one of the quietest periods of the year. Last month, however, the usual summer holiday hiatus never materialised: recruiter Morgan McKinley's monthly City employment barometer (below) suggests vacancies leapt 18% compared to July.
Morgan McKinley derives the barometer from looking at its own roles, which are mostly middle and back office, so this may not provide an accurate representation of what's happening to front office positions. And the number of jobs is still around 40% down year on year.
Nonetheless, Andrew Evans, managing director of Morgan McKinley's financial services division, is overflowing with optimism: "There has been an obvious progression in terms of confidence levels within the City hiring market. This increased commitment to hire coupled with positive results from the FTSE recently and an improving M&A outlook will hopefully drive the continuation of encouraging jobs figures into the month of September."
