Who hired in the Middle East in July?

Perhaps surprisingly, international financial institutions continue to transfer staff internally to the Middle East region, while local firms keep on hiring externally.

Abraaj Capital, the Gulf private equity firm, has hired Ashok Aram has managing director. He joins from Deutsche Bank and is the latest in a series of senior appointments this year.

Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank has recruited Sarvesh Sarup as head of its retail banking group. He joins from Citigroup.

BankDhofar, the Omani bank, has appointed Hani Habib Macki as assistant general manager for strategy and planning.

Barclays Wealth has a new addition to its Dubai based team in the form of Harry Martin who joins as director for international private banking.

Friends Provident, the UK insurer and fund management group, has hired Omar Shelbaya as head of Middle East banassurance.

Gulf Finance House, the Bahrain-based Islamic investment bank, has a new chief exec. Ahmed Fahour joins from National Bank of Australia and is due to relocate to Bahrain in August.

HSBC

has made a raft of internal transfers to bolster its Middle East presence. Simon Vaughn Johnson moves from Hong Kong to take the role of regional head of commercial banking in the GCC. Tony Graham joins as head of personal finance business in Qatar, while Jody Sanderson was appointed as director global banking in Doha and KV Prakashan takes the role of senior manager, wholesale credit risk.

Lloyds TSB has a new head of its Middle East business in the form of Richard Musty. He was previously consumer banking director, Middle East at the bank.

Morgan Stanley has relocated Cyrus Behbehani from London to Dubai to take the role of head of investment banking in the Middle East following the departure of May Nasrallah.

Nexus, the financial adviser, has made five appointments to build its Middle East team in advance of an anticipated rise in demand for its services.

Nomura, the Japanese investment bank, has kick-started its Saudi Arabia operations, and will be carrying out corporate finance, capital markets and wealth management activity.

Saxo Bank, the Danish institution which gained a DIFC licence in May, has appointed Jakob Thomsen as senior executive in Dubai.

Standard Chartered has taken on David Inglesfield to head up its private bank in the Middle East and North Africa. The MENA region is included in the bank's plans to add 100 relationship managers over the next 12 months.
