Diary of another investment banking intern: Week five

This week has been a very very fast one. I remember very clearly coming out of the shower on Thursday morning feeling really good about myself, about the day ahead and about the company I'm working for. People say an internship is for someone to see if they would fit in with the job or with the team. This is true: FIT is most important thing in a job like this.

I am trying very hard (and probably failing) not to make this diary a boring read; hence I'm not going to recite all the financial knowledge that's being pumped into me on a daily basis. Instead I will try to talk about the interesting things and people I've come across in my firm.

As you might imagine, attempting to stay fit and awake in IBD is a very tough job. When you're working at least 16 hours a day, there's usually not much energy and mind power left for exercise (at least for me).

Come the weekend, if you're lucky enough not to have to come into the office, it seems most bankers relax and sleep. I used to do a lot of sports during a university term and usually went to the gym twice a week. Now, I just feel very lazy and would rather sit around and do nothing than go for a weekend run. Hopefully, when it comes to proper analyst job later, I can regain my motivation and not become obese.

Having said this, however, it's amazing how fit and in shape many of the bankers are. This particularly seems to apply to the minority of lady bankers. I am very amazed at how people can manage to work so much yet still have motivation to workout. Maybe this is one of the many things I am yet to learn during my internship.

I have always enjoyed being busy rather than not, hence IBD seems an ideal division for me to grow and learn. Hopefully my work will get more and more interesting and I will have more topics and stories for everyone next week.
