Why it made sense to become a teacher, doctor or civil servant

Bankers who have been queuing up to join the public sector are - or were - onto something.

Yesterday's ONS report on the impact of the recession on the labour market showed public sector employment increasing consistently throughout last year.

Meanwhile, employment in financial services plummeted. According to the ONS, job losses in the finance and business sector were steeper in the nine months to Q109 than at any time since 1978.

But if you haven't gone for the buzz of teaching and civil service pensions already, now may not be the time to do so. Thousands of public sector jobs will be eliminated over the next two years after the election.

Sarah, why don't you give us an article about the employment prospects of bankers who leave to make their fortunes in online poker, ebay gambling and spread-betting? Because apparently these are all ways to make milions, guaranteed, according to Henry. Actually, even better, what about bankers who buy loads of lottery tickets? Or maybe you should run an article on people who were put on non-cyclical trading desks, like FX for example, because they weren't good enough to cut it on a sexier, more interesting desks?

Jester, don't disagree with you, that a doctor is worth more to society than me pushing around money on 8 screens. That's completely irrelevant though, I'd rather this fun life becoming a millionaire in my early 20s than "giving something back" or whatever mumbo jumbo.

Ah, you've got to love Wallbeck Henry, the unloved & bullied child, who is still confusing his good fortune to be in the position he is in to the point he actually believes in his self-concocted superhuman abilities & hence he thinks he truly deserves the kind of unfathomable pay relativities we see in society. I mean anyone who stares at screens all day moving other people's money around is surely deserved of more money than what a Doctor & Teacher & probably several other society enhancing professions earn combined? That extraploation is obvious, no?

Any one who has spent some time in Banking knows that as long as you are good at maths, the toughest thing about any banking job is getting the chair & then putting in the hours to keep it. Once in it, its all much of a muchness.

The public sector, although important, does not 'drive' the economy. People are scared to death of unemployment and being plunged into relative poverty and as a result will take anything going in an attempt to maintain a lifestyle.

Fear and emotions can do amazing things to people!
