More RBS jobs losses to come

The number of jobs to be lost at RBS in Scotland may have been bandied around the 260 mark, but a warning from the bank today suggest there could be more on the cards going forward.

So far this year, the bank has said it intends to cut 2,700 jobs in the UK and, although it has been unclear as to the total number going forward, it said this morning that more redundancies are likely.

"We can only be honest and say that this will not be the end of the story and more are expected in the UK and internationally in the period ahead," said Sir Philip Hampton, speaking ahead of the bank's annual general meeting today.

RBS said it would do all it can to keep redundancies to a minimum and was hoping headcount could be reduced mainly through natural turnover.

Sir Philip hoped to make a pre-emptive appeal to end the "public flogging" of the bank ahead of today's meeting.

The G20 protests around the City of London this week illustrate the public's anger about what it sees as rich, greedy bankers steering the country into crisis - a perception Sir Philip thinks is unfair on the majority of RBS staff.

He said: "The majority of RBS staff in the UK earn less than 21,000 a year - they are not fat-cats or city slickers, they work in branches, call-centres and offices in every community in the country serving our customers to a standard of service that is among the best in the industry."

And these types of roles have also been chopped. Last week it laid off 98 people within its personal loans division in Rotherham.
