GUEST COMMENT: How to live like a normal person

In my experience it is quite possible to live on a moderate income. Here is how I, a not unsuccessful trader, achieve it -

Holidays: It is not necessary to spend thousands on a luxury 5 star holiday in the Maldives or Dubai. There are credible non-trendy alternatives at fraction of the price. I am not recommending package holidays in Spain or self-catering hell at Butlins, I am suggesting reducing your carbon footprint and visiting the many of the superb locations within the U.K.

Transport: (Unless you are German and have access to the autobahns), it is not necessary to have a Porsche. Opt for a bike. You will save fortunes on depreciation and can buy a people carrier for special events.

Office lunch: There is nothing shameful about reheating food in a Tupperware dish.

Evening dining: It is not necessary to spend 100-300 on a meal. Forget big name restaurants and Michelin stars. Try independent local eateries.

Sartorial affairs: M&S brogues are remarkably similar to Churches. Once you are in a legally binding personal relationship, designer underwear can be quickly dispensed with.

Children: Mine are state educated at an institution that rivals many of the local public schools. They are learning the value of moderate living, a skill that will last them a lifetime.

I have just read all the comments and I find them really FUNNY...............It really does show a bit of the city !!!!!!!!!!!!! if not all I need to know about the city (Square Mile) lol

Humans are really amusing and I am glad people are willing to share their opinions on this site, cool stuff.

P.S I have also noticed that every person that posted a comment tried to post a better entry than the previous post or post the best comment for the topic! I like that.

I was a career banker who went out on my own in finance and now probably do better than most high flying finance executives. From the beginning, Maldives and Dubai are always second rate to me, I go German but dont care for Porsches, I hardly go out for lunch and if I do other people pay. If I pay I will be at some small unknown corner food place. I dont care for Michelin rated restaurants likes of Bibendum, ElBulli, the A. Duccas, while I do enjoy them, I think they are over rated. I have Churches (in fact very early in my career!) and Pinets but I prefer MS shoes. The exception is that my kids are still in an exceptional school.

Today I dont think about bonuses as I am the one who decide. I dont think about taking leave for holidays because again I decide. In fact I still hire and fire people.

Listen boys and girls, you have the formula all wrong. It is sad to see how you put yourself to serve this stereotype and where the hell is it going to get you? This economic disaster is probably the best thing that ever happened to you. Get real, pick up the pieces and make something of your lives ...make something on your own and find your independence. Like me.. : ) Good luck
