Defend your career in finance
Our Singapore site is running an interesting post after asking senior bankers to stick up for their career decisions.
With financiers now occupying a place in public opinion, 'significantly lower than cannibalistic paedophile global-warming deniers' (in the words of Boris Johnson), there's never been a better time to explain the non-monetary allure of the industry.
Unfortunately, the Singapore bankers are relatively circumspect in their enthusiasm.
Peter Foo, Fortis Bank Singapore's chief executive, says banking still makes sense for those who are in it for the long-haul and don't just see it as a way to make quick cash.
And a young banker admits many of his colleagues went into banking simply to make fast money and then moved on when they found it wasn't al that interesting. "We realised that it's really the pay and prestige that has drawn us to banking in the first place. After 1.5 years, we realised that none of us are really into banking per se."
Neither of these amounts to much of a defence. Let us know if you can do better.
