New York Events, Mostly Free

Will the "Pink Slip Party" grow into an institution to rival the Super Bowl? Bringing candidates together with recruiters, performance coaches, and other resources, the Wall Street version debuted last November and drew 600 people. Its next installment on Feb. 4 leads off our updated listing of free or low-cost events for professionals "in transition," slated for the next few weeks. (All the following events take place in New York City.)

Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Wall Street Pink Slip Party. Candidates network with recruiters and career coaches. The Public House, 140 E 41st Street between Lexington and Third Avenues. The New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) hosts a "Career Chat" panel one evening each month.

Thursday, Feb. 12, 5:30 p.m. networking; panel discussion 6:15 -7:45: "Practical Guide To Starting A Firm." NYSSA, 1177 Avenue of the Americas (between 45th and 46th Streets), 2nd Floor. Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 - 2:15 p.m.: "Build Your Job Search Strategy," by scoping out how employers think, what they're looking for and how to explain what you want. Science, Industry, and Business Library, 188 Madison Avenue at 34th Street.

Also on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. and 2:30 - 3:15 p.m.: "Network into the Hidden Job Market." Who to talk to, how to build relationships to get the information you need, and how to talk to people to help them help you.
