Are you working yourself to death?

Everyone knows that bankers work hard. It's part of the deal: 18 hour days, big payoffs, retire early. But the news last weekend that Gavin Macdonald, head of M&A at Morgan Stanley died at his desk in London aged just 47, is enough to make anyone wonder whether it's worth it.

Our thoughts are with Macdonald's family. They are also with the thousands of others for whom the stress of City life, particularly in the current environment, can take a dangerous toll.

There's nothing to say that Gavin Macdonald died due to stress or overwork, but the fact that he was still in the office late on Friday night is indicative of the long hours worked by many in the industry. Research suggests that people who sleep for fewer than 7.5 hours a night are more prone to heart attacks than those who sleep for 7.5 hours or more.

So next time you're still at your desk at 12am, it's worth asking whether it's really worth it. The answer is probably no. Let us know if you agree below.

Working 8 hours a day and no more is a everyday rule. I work to live, not live to work. I have a salary above average and I enjoy in my precious free time with friends, family and hobbies. I would not change it for anything.

More to the point, now that bonus' are a pretty much a relic of a past system, who the hell would be working 18 hour days in this current environment?? The only ONLY reason people worked so hard was to get that big fat pay check at the end of the year, and now that is pretty much wiped, who in their right mind would do those sort of hours?? YOu'd either have to have a long term plan to set yourself up for when(and if) the market recovers, and even that is taking a big risk that you won't be dumped before that happens, or you're just a sucker for punishment.

Given that bank wages are going to be on par with other 10 hr day jobs for a few years to come, what is the point??

Have worked the long hours and have worked 9-5.

Long hours are ok....occasionally, when your single and when you hang out with your team a lot and your food and ride home is paid for.

Otherwise it sucks, it's bad for your health, keeps you away from your loved ones and it steals your soul whilst your at it..

I mean...who seriously wants to work 18 hours days?

I know people who stay at work until 10pm, to make sure they
don't leave before their boss does....and i think it's gutless and pathetic.

Work and Life should be the priority in this day and age,
otherwise work is just another form of slavery.

Thomas - I am sorry to hear of the STD you picked up from working on the M&A desk. Too many beauty parades or did you have to conduct too many "company comparables"?
