JPMorgan: Investment banking (IBD) interview (graduate)
Question:
How do you respond to change? Imagine you are married with two children and you are asked to move to a new country - how would you go about convincing your family to move?
Candidate's answer:
I'd sit down with them and explain what was going to happen. I would ask everyone what they'd expect in the way of services and extra-curricular activities from the new country and would then research their availability. I would also take them to the new city or country to show them around and address any concerns they had.
Question:
You are advising a CEO on a possible merger. However, you do not believe that the merger will be good value. The CEO tells you that he is only doing it to improve his status and that he will be gone in a few years' time. What do you do?
Candidate's answer:
I would try and convince the CEO that it would take more than a few years for the benefits of the acquisition to filter down and enhance his reputation. I would also point out that it takes longer for good news than bad news to make an impact and the potential disastrous consequences of an ill-thought out merger or acquisition.
Question:
What's 12 divided by 5? What's 11 divided by 9?
