No women, no ethnic minorities, and definitely no gays

Are trading floors really full of misogynistic racists with a low tolerance of homosexuality? Or does this kind of allegation help win court cases?

Peter Lewis, the former head of equity trading at HSBC who last year lost a claim that he was dismissed from the bank on the grounds of discrimination because he's gay, is re-launching his case alleging that the bank discriminated against him due to his sexuality.

Lewis, who apparently joined HSBC on a 1.6m guaranteed package over two years, is in the Financial Times today claiming that his own team of several hundred traders at HSBC included no women at all and "very few" people from different ethnic backgrounds. He also says banking lags behind other industries when it comes to diversity, and that diversity guidelines in employee handbooks don't usually match what happens on the ground.

Andrew Pullman of HR Consultancy People Risk Solutions - and a former head of capital markets HR at Dresdner Kleinwort - says Lewis' claims should be taken with a pinch of salt. "He seems to be re-launching a legal case and is going to want to make HSBC look bad," says Pullman. "I don't know HSBC or this case well, so I can't comment about specifics, but my feeling is that most organisations these days are fairly diverse. When I was at Dresdner we employed over 65 different nationalities across the bank in London alone."

Pullman admits women can be hard to come by on trading floors, however: "Very few apply. They're all frightened off by the stories about discrimination in the press!"

Wow. What a hornets nest this is turning out to be. My credentials. White, British, ex-trader turned headhunter. This thread has both ends of the spectrum. 'Telling' who is clearly one of those who will attest "I'm not racist, some of my best friends are black" and "Truth" whose evident lack of success must be everyone else's fault rather than his own. Of course there is prejudice in the City. There is also equanimity. Certain people such as 'Telling' illustrate the former and others, who have employed black people (or other minorities in the City) clearly come from the latter group. The City is the most competitive, meritrocratic square mile in the world. If you can't get in its probably because you are not in the top 1%. Certainly some who are black and have endeavoured to enter the City's hallowed ranks and failed have been the victims of racism or a racist mentality. Certainly others have not. But to tar the whole City with the same brush is as outrageous as 'Telling' intimating that people are unable to distinguish between a potential criminal and a potential Managing Director and so tar all of that group similarly. Guys - middle ground please. Remember this is England.

can any of you help. writing a report on ethnic backgrounds within equity trading, sales and research. Are there any key players and which IBs do they work for. Happy to talk off the record and just get a better understanding about what needs to be done and how to approach the subject. Boss wants to get a better picture of diversity groups in senior IB roles. Please text 07760 351 238.

Firstly let me address Nick. When a recruiter sees someone with the name Smith, Brown etc. Yes they do think its a white person whos coming to the interview. then when the see them, the think Ohhhhh, I thought that you are were going to be white. All ends there; chances are then against you.

Telling, I agree with you on these rappers etc. they really do send the wrong message out. It certainly doesn't help anyone especially when the applicant is black.

Black people have excelled at sports because that is one of the very few options that were available to them and that white people would let them reach their ability. However there is believe it or not more to black people than music and sport. With regards to academic, more needs to be done. besides I am an African and education is taken very seriously.
