Internship diaries 2007

Thoughts are turning to job offers for our interns - three fresh faces following three different but similar career paths.

Read how the three of them get on as we follow them every step of the way in their bid to get a permanent job at some of the City's top institutions. One is following the investment banking path; one is looking to work in markets and another wants to go into the technology side of banking.

If you fancy following in their footsteps but don't know what to expect, our interns' diaries will give you a good idea of life on the bottom rung of the investment banking ladder.

· Diary of an investment banking intern, week ten

· Diary of a technology intern, week ten

· Diary of a markets intern, week six

Asset-backed securitisation is used by companies to realise an income stream early. For example, a credit card company with outstanding credit card repayments can package these payments together. They then set up a shell company, and transfer the income stream from the repayments to this new company. The new company then issues debt, backed by the transferred income stream (the 'asset'), pays the income from the debt sale to the parent company, and repays the coupons on the bonds with, in this example, the credit card payments, as they are paid. Mortgage-backed is a similar idea with mortgage payments. But like DCM Guy said, you need to do your homework or, like a Merrill Lynch guy said to me yesterday, "You'll get your arse handed to you!" Good luck!
