Debate: Delights (or not) of Dubai; nasty bankers; BNP nice after all

What you don't know about the Middle East; bullying bankers; and BNPP is really quite nice in fact (according to those who work there).

Mixed reviews on Middle East

On one hand the money's good, there's a beach, it doesn't rain all the time and the women 'rock' (apparently). One the other, it's too hot, you might need an exit visa to leave and you're stuffed if you lose your job within the first year. Is moving to the Middle East worth it?

Down and out in Dubai

Bad boys (and girls)

Bankers aren't always well behaved, according to our new columnist Hugh Karseras. What with all those alphas in one place, it seems bullying is endemic and banks aren't always keen on doing anything about it. Plenty of you agree. The solution: collect evidence and sue, or cut and run.

The Insider: When bankers behave badly

Standing up for BNP Paribas

Last week we said BNP Paribas paid badly and lots of people said "Very true.' This week there's been a deluge of BNP bankers ready to stand up for their beloved employer. Seems those who've complained aren't top performers and BNPP is a friendly kind of place where everyone goes home before it gets dark.

Broke at BNP?

Badri, you certainly say it like it is (gulp). I don't like Dubai because, apart from all else that has been said, it is another rat race and not a place to bring up a family. However, the attraction of the Dubai extravaganza has brought with it the power of more choice for locally based firms in their hires. This is culminating in a gradual increase in the overall standard / quality of expat that works in the banking field. In the meantime, Dubai is (and Bahrain always has been) able to attract more qualified local staff to return to the region and thus narrow the gap. It is not ideal but things are certainly looking up.

Dubai sucks big time! but in my field, unfortunaltely this is where the biggies are!!! as rightly pointed out, this country is racist in their core values.. and discriminatory in every facet of life..
those looking to learn "culture", dubai is obviously the wrong place.. it is like any other metropolis.. a hotch-potch of cultures.. and i am sure staying in london u could learn about arab culture!!..
reg work.. a white skin is preferred anyday, even if they arent worth the seats they sit on.... and unfortunately, dubai seems to attract mostly white trash.. so they add fuel to the fire..
all in all.. in my opinion, i wont recommend dubai/middleeast!
