IT is it in the Gulf

Software companies are flocking to Dubai, fuelling demand for IT staff in the Emirate.

Recruiters say the need for techies has rocketed in the last year with requests coming in thick and fast for security and storage specialists as well as system architects and project managers.

Damon Chapple, director of IT recruiters Pathway Resourcing, says his firm entered the Gulf market six months ago because of such high demand. "Demand comes from local and international banks as well as firms coming in from abroad and setting up operations," he says.

IT companies such as Atos Euronext Market Solutions, S1 Corporation and Thomson Financial have all opened in Dubai in the past year, and more are set to follow.

Michael Ketley of headhunters MRK Consulting says demand's also coming from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and elsewhere in the Gulf.

Typical pay varies between US$70k and US$200k, according to recruiters. And packages include eight weeks' holiday and housing allowances.

Demand is reportedly strongest for those staff with around five years' experience.

I do know that there is a big market in the IT sector in Dubai. But how do i get hired there?
I have been sending out resumes for eah and every high level position posted on most job boards..
I have 5 ADVANCED DEGREES.. with over 20 years of SOLID IT experience in USA and EUROPE!

The problems i am running into is (i think, please correct me if i am wrong)

1: My present location is Pakistan.

2: with the 1000s of resumes coming into the employement agents .. no one is really looking at the resumes.. otherwise i would for sure get hired.
3: I have not been able to find a proper Networking channel..

Any advice? Please let me know

Hi Ilias, i think that is terrible. Whilst working in Saudi, I have seen people from Pakistan and The Phillipines being exploited regarding pay. The problem is two-fold. 1) That employers know that they would be getting a lot less in their country, and feel that they should be happy and not complain. 2) That when people come from these countries they do not know what the market rate is and are happy to get paid this little (until like you, they find out what other people get!).

The solution is to get educated before you accept an offer from Saudi, and to not be afraid to refuse a job if it is low paid. This helps everyone, in the end, to get a better deal as companies will eventually learn. I was replaced by someone from Pakistan because they were a lot "cheaper" so lost my job as a direct result of someone accepting low pay. Good luck with negotiating a higher salary!
