New private banking graduate programme

Want to help wealthy people manage their money? A UK private bank has launched a new graduate programme.

Brown Shipley, a UK private bank with offices in London, Manchester and Leeds, is inviting applications for between six and eight graduate training places next year. If you haven't heard back from investment banks, there's still time to apply - the deadline is 31 January and interviews will take place in February and March.

Peter Collier, marketing strategy director at the bank, says the ideal applicant will be more than a mere academic superstar: "We want people who love dealing with other people, who are good listeners, and who understand the concept of risk."

Successful candidates will be paid a salary of 26k, plus a signing-on bonus.

Brown Shipley isn't the only private bank to offer a graduate training programme (UBS, Credit Suisse and Coutts do, too), but entry-level roles in the industry are fairly rare.

Cath Tillotson, head of research at private banking consultancy Scorpio Partnership, says private banks just don't go in for training in the same way as investment banks: "There's a major skills gap. After a period of major growth in the private banking industry, graduate training has just got to be done."

Which may make Brown Shipley's scheme a good career move....

When does this programme open the gates for 2008 applicants? Is it worth sending CV and cover letter prior to this date, as I have an exploding offer elsewhere and must move quickly if I wish to pursue other avenues.

    Thanks.
