Glasgow fund managers accept part qualified accountants

A shortage of experienced financial services staff in Glasgow is prompting the city's finance employers to relax their hiring criteria.

Alan Thornburrow chief executive of Scottish Investment Operations, tells us employers in Glasgow are especially willing to consider candidates looking to change careers because of a shortage of suitably qualified employees.

"In Glasgow where there is not such a talent pool as in Edinburgh so employers are looking for part qualified accountants interested in a new start as an investment or fund accountant," he says.

Thornburrow is just about to embark on a round of promotions at Scottish recruitment fairs aimed at promoting the benefits of working in Scotland's financial services sector.

He says the fairs, which begin in Aberdeen this Thursday and will continue in Glasgow and Edinburgh throughout October and November, are intended to help those contemplating a career change - inform school leavers and graduates - better understand the breadth of careers options available in asset management

The fairs will also promote finance employers' willingness to accommodate the needs of women returning to the workforce after having children.

Unlike their counterparts south of the border, Scotland's financial services companies are well up on the flexible working revolution. Royal Bank of Scotland, for example, in addition to having work place nursery and child care voucher system also operates a term time working policy which enables parents to match their working life to their children's school year.
