Equity research jobs migrating east

As banks become increasingly open to outsourcing equity research and other intellectual work overseas, are equity research jobs at risk of moving to India?

Copal Partners, a Delhi-based outsourcing firm with 400 analysts is reputedly doing well out of the trade and has successfully recruited graduate interns from top UK universities with the offer of training and free accommodation, the Financial Times reports.

This is a contrast to the usual outsourcing of back office functions that has become all too common in recent years. Will more banks buy into it?

"The Asian continent is riddled with exceeding bright candidates with MBA's who can't get jobs, so there is no real reason why these jobs should be based in London," says Noel Marshall, managing director, banking and financial markets, at recruitment firm Finance Professionals.

"A 100k research VP can be on the other side of the world and still produce the same quality of research as one based in London, and India certainly has the level of candidate to do it. So I see no reason why this can't and will not be a possibility for banks."
