Barclays chair to earn 750,000
Marcus Agius, the newly appointed Barclays chairman, is to be paid a salary of 750,000 a year for his troubles once he replaces Matt Barrett on January 1 2007, but is not eligible for Barclays' bonus and long-term incentive schemes.
The Times says Barrett earned 704,000 last year and will receive a package of about 750,000 this current financial year, while the Telegraph says he received a salary of 650,000 last year.
Barrett will not receive a pay-off but he is said to hold shares worth 8.4m in the bank, accumulated during his period as Barclays chief executive between 1999 and 2004.
