Women money managers jump up rich list
Women may be struggling in the world of interdealer broking, but they appear to be doing very well, thank you, when it comes to fund management and hedge funds.
The Sunday Times rich list, published last weekend, contained several female financiers, many of them in the money management business.
Greek-born Elena Ambrosiadu, manager of hedge fund group Ikos, with 1.14bn under management, is said to be worth 200m. Nichola Pease, chief executive of JO Hambro Capital Management, and her husband, the hedge fund manager Crispin Odey, are said to be worth a joint 283m. And Jayne Sutcliffe, chief executive of Charlemagne Capital, another hedge fund with 2.3bn under management, is said to be worth 60m.
The rich list debut of female hedge fund managers comes despite an article in Fortune Magazine last year claiming that US hedge funds employ 100 times fewer women than investment banks.
One London-based headhunter says women are a lot more prevalent in the hedge fund world than they used to be: "A few years ago there were only about 10 female hedge fund managers. Since then, there's been a huge influx of women into the industry, but they're still in the minority."
