Job Wrap: Paying for relationships
There were a handful of moves among senior staff with strong client relationships last week. Calyon and Citigroup gained; Lazard lost out.
Calyon appointed Gilles de Dumast, former head of French investment banking at Deutsche Bank as global head of investment banking. He replaces David Villeneuve, whose exit to Credit Suisse First Boston was announced last week.
Citigroup hired Mathew Wooton, deputy head of the London Stock Exchange's AIM junior segment as part of an effort to increase its number of small and mid cap corporate broking mandates. Wooton will join Citigroup's corporate broking division as a vice president.
Meanwhile, Matteo Manfredi, a managing director at Lazard in Italy, became the second senior dealmaker to quit the firm in the past few months. Manfredi, who had been at Lazard for 10 years, followed in the footsteps of Gerardo Braggiotti, who left four months ago to launch his own boutique.
Separately, ABN Amro revealed a planned restructuring in order to focus more strongly on mid-market corporate clients. On January 1st the bank's three main business units - consumer and commercial clients, wholesale clients, and private clients and asset management - will be replaced by a new structure to be revealed soon. At the same time, chief operating officer Hugh Scott-Barrett, will take over as finance chief. Huibert Boumeester, Piero Overmars and Ron Teerlink will be proposed as new board members.
And Savills, a London listed property group, hired Andrew Causer, a former banker at HSBC James Capel, to head its new corporate finance department.
Equities: Jefferies and Instinet hire; Fox-Pitt loses an eighth
Jefferies International hired Anna Barnfather from Bear Stearns as a senior equity research analyst in the European hotel and gaming sector.
Instinet hired Peter Howard from ABN Amro as head of equities for Europe, and Peter Randall from the Financial Information Exchange as head of business development.
Philippe Annamayer, who joined Fox-Pitt Kelton as head of European banks research 16 months ago, left to join a fund management firm. Annamayer is the eighth staff member to leave the investment bank this month; seven senior corporate financiers left last week
Fixed income: SG hires for debt origination
SG Corporate and Investment bank hired two for European debt origination. Ralf Löwe joined as a director from the debt origination team at Depfa Bank in Frankfurt; Lennert Wiedermann joined as a vice president in corporate debt origination from JP Morgan.
Calyon hired ex-JP Morgan banker Josep Santacana as head of market making for European liquid bonds. Santacana left JP Morgan in July.
Primus Guaranty, the US credit derivative specialist, hired Malcolm Basing, former chief operating officer of UBS Americas, as its new UK chairman in a bid to build a European business.
Infrastructure finance: Babcock & Brown takes again from ABN
Australian bank Babcock & Brown hired four bankers from ABN Amro's London infrastructure team. Vaughan Wallace, Gavin Tait, Matt Hunt and Mike Leto have agreed to join the bank in London. Three of the four are on gardening leave. Babcock recently poached ABN's infrastructure finance team in Australia.
Asset management/custody: Morley hires three; F&C loses two
Morley Fund Management announced three hires for its fixed income business. They include Holly Grainger from F&C, who joins in November as a credit analyst in its fixed income team. Steve Barker from SBJ Benefit Consultants joined in the summer as a fixed income product specialist and Malika Gulabani also joined in the summer from Schroders Investment Management as client director.
As well as losing Grainger, F&C saw the departure of Brian Corris, head of institutional pension funds at F&C, who left to join Baring Asset Management.
JO Hambro Capital Management hired Gordon Elvey from the British Steel pension fund as a fund manager. It also hired two new directors to focus outside its core European equities business. Alan Gibbs joined from South China Securities as head of Asian equities. David Gibbs joined from Robert Fleming Securities to run fixed income.
Northern Trust hired Ian Castledine from Merrill Lynch Investment Managers as a senior risk consultant in London. Casteline was an equity risk quant analyst at MLIM.
Glyn Jones, the ousted chief executive of Gartmore, became chief executive of hedge fund group Thames River Capital. Jones was forced out as London chief executive of Gartmore last year.
Nicholas Applegate, the US fund management firm, hired Steve Tael from Mellon Capital Management as a vice-president in its international quantitatively-run equities division.
Douglas Findlay-Shirras, former director of marketing at State Street Global Advisors in London, joined Dawnay, Day International, the UK property investment and financial services group, as head of institutional marketing.
Clearstream, the custody and settlement arm of Deutsche Börse Group, hired Phillipe Seyll from Bank of New York as its new head of investment fund services.
Ruffer, the London-based investment firm, hired Philip Morris from Barclays Private Bank to the newly created position of investment director.
Ratings agencies: S&P hires from Thomson
Standard & Poors hired James Prices from Thomson Financial as director of market development for its European data and information services business.
Private equity : European Capital opens a London office
European Capital Financial Services opened a London office and hired five employees. They include: Nathalie Faure Beaulieu, who joins from Mezzanine Management U.K as managing director and head of pan-European mezzanine; Simon Henderson, who joins from Barclays Private Equity as managing director and head of Pan-European mezzanine, Matthew Gordon Clark and Jeffrey Tebbutt, who join from Mezzanine Management U.K as directors.
Electra Partners, the UK mid-market private equity group, hired five executives in Europe. Stephen Evans joins from Bain & Co as an associate. Tim Easingwood also joins as an executive from Permira. Andreas Kraemer joins from Morgan Stanley as an associate in Frankfurt. Frederic Azemard joins as an associate in Paris from Bain & Co. And Cedric Azemard joins as a principal in Paris from Apax Partners.
Exchanges: Senior appointments at Euronext and Deutsche Börse
Peter Green, chief executive of derivatives broker The Kyte Group, joined the board of London-based derivatives exchange Euronext.Liffe as a non-executive director.
Deutsche Börse, the German exchange operator, appointed Kurt Viermetz as chairman and Reto Francioni as chief executive.
