Job Wrap: Equities hot for the summer
There was little sign of a summer lull in hiring last week. Equities were hot, with Piper Jaffray, Banc of America and Barclays Capital all hiring.
Piper Jaffray & Co. opened an equity sales and trading office in Boston, and hired four people to staff it. Rob Reilly joined from Prudential Equity Group as a managing director, senior sales trader and manager of the new Boston office. Marc Beran joined from Fidelity Capital Markets as a sales trader. Scott Spottiswoode joined from Susquehanna Financial Group, also as a sales trader. Neil Higgins joined from Banc of America Securities as a managing director and manager of the institutional equity sales team in Boston. Bill Durkin joined from Soundview/Schwab as a senior salesperson.
Banc of America Securities made two equities hires. Mark Hantho joined from Morgan Stanley as a managing director and global head of equity capital markets. T.C. Robillard joined from Chilton Investment Co. as a principal and senior research analyst covering the business services sector.
Barclays Capital hired three for equity derivatives, including one in Tokyo, one in Madrid and one in New York. The New York hire was Ed Ware, who joined as an associate director in investor solutions from BNP Paribas.
Harris Nesbitt hired two equity research analysts to cover Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), and a capital goods research analyst. Paul Adornato and Richard Anderson join from Maxcor Financial, an independent equity research firm, to cover REITs. Charles Brady joins from Hibernia Southcoast Capital in New Orleans to cover capital goods.
Only Wells Fargo put a dampener on the sector. It said it was closing its equity research team with immediate effect, and would try to find team members jobs elsewhere in the bank.
Fixed income and debt: HSBC hires McGovern
HSBC hired Michael McGovern from JP Morgan to lead its US syndicated finance team. McGovern is the third senior hire for HSBC's debt unit since May.
Raphael Gonzalez joined Banc of America Securities from BNP Paribas as a principal and senior ABS trader.
Fitch Ratings made two hires to cover the US corporate high yield sector. Lisa B. Matalon joined from Moody's Investors Service as a senior director. Amol Joshi joined from Fitch Risk, a sister company, as a director.
Jefferies & Company hired Michael S. Effron from Piper Jaffray & Co to head its US Government Agency business.
Investment Banking: Strautman joins Banc of America Securities
Banc of America Securities hired Renard Strautman, president of independent firm Trumont Advisors and a former managing director at Merrill Lynch, as managing director in its global industries corporate & investment banking group.
Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin hired Lan Nguyen from Wasserstein Perella & Co to its technology group as a senior investment banking officer in New York.
BNP Paribas shifted Jamie Morton from its London office to become a director and head of oil, gas and mining corporate finance for the Americas based in New York.
Deutsche Bank appointed Devin Murphy, a managing director in its Americas real estate banking team, global head of real estate investment banking.
Fund management and wealth management: Deutsche hires new head of US Wealth Management
Deutsche Bank hired Mark Peters from Citigroup's private bank, to run its US wealth-management group.
Wachovia Trust, a division of Wachovia Wealth Management, named W. Robert Newell as president. Newell, a Wachovia veteran of 24 years, will succeed Robert Kniejski, who is retiring.
Custody: Northern Trust hires for Toronto
Northern Trust hired Peter Matzelle, a fixed income trader from Clarica Life Insurance as a senior securities lending fixed income trader, based in its Toronto office.
