Job Wrap: Houlihan dips into Piper Jaffray

Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin, the Los Angeles-based investment bank, raided Minneapolis-based Piper Jaffray & Co. last week. Houlihan hired six bankers from Piper Jaffray's technology M&A group to help it win business from technology firms.

The Houlihan hires include Jason Hutchinson, who will be head of technology mergers and acquisitions, and vice presidents Setch Subudhayangkul and Jace Kowalzyk. All will be based in San Francisco.

BofA hires for research, HSBC hires for MBS

Banc of America Securities hired David Witzke, Ph.D., as a principal and equity research analyst. Witzke joins from Suntrust Robinson Humphrey, where he had been a senior equity research analyst covering biotechnology companies since 2003. He will be based in New York.

HSBC Securities (USA) raided Bear Stearns for its U.S mortgage backed securities team.

Russell Middleton and Brian Song both join as senior vice presidents.

Hedge Funds and Fund Managers: Janus hires Parry; Legg hires Peters

Janus Capital Group Inc, a Colorado-based fund manager, hired Robert T. Parry, former head of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, to its board of directors.

Legg Mason Capital Management, a subsidiary of Legg Mason, hired Sam Peters as a senior vice president and portfolio manager. Peters joins from Fidelity Management & Research, where he was portfolio manager of the Fidelity Select Health Care Fund and the Fidelity Select Medical Equipment Fund.

TowerGroup, the investment consulting firm, hired Steve Crosby from British Telecom's (BT) financial services operations in the Americas as the new leader of its securities and investments consulting team.

Ben Smith and Sheehan Maduraperuma were understood to have left JP Morgan Chase & Co. in New York to start a hedge fund. Smith and Maduraperuma, who traded equity derivatives at JP Morgan, are expected to start Laurion Capital Management, an equity volatility and statistical arbitrage hedge fund this summer.

Compliance and Operations: Lehman creates chief counsel role

Lehman Brothers hired Scott Kursman from the Securities Industry Association into a new role as chief counsel for global compliance, starting April 11. Kursman is associate general counsel in the SIA's capital markets group and a former Securities and Exchange Commission attorney. The SIA has not yet named his replacement.

Freddie Mac hired Joseph A. Rossi from Mellon Financial Corporation as senior vice president, securities and treasury operations. Rossi will be responsible for managing operations related to Freddie Mac's mortgage securities issuance and settlement, debt issuance and settlement, derivative settlement and asset management.
