Job Wrap: ABN poaches from the Treasury, BarCap from Moody's

ABN Amro and Barclays Capital went outside the investment banking sector to fill positions. Other moves affecting SG, Merrill, Lehman, plus various fund managers and hedge funds, rounded out last week.

ABN Amro hired Dominic White, an economist at the UK Treasury, for a position on its European economics team in London. It was the second time in eight months that the Dutch bank has recruited from the Treasury.

Barclays Capital hired Hans Vrensen from Moody's Investors Service, the rating agency, to boost its research capabilities in the securitisation market. Vrensen will cover European commercial mortgage-backed securities.

Barclays Capital may be tapping ratings agencies again soon. Bob Diamond, chief executive, said the bank is planning more than 50 hires for its Frankfurt office. The expansion will include junior and senior hires and will take the number of bankers in Frankfurt from 150 to 200.

SG hires, Elden and Millar retire

Société Générale Corporate and Investment bank hired Raphael Geys of UBS. Geys, who was head of European distribution for fixed income and rates at UBS, was made head of European fixed income sales for financial institutions. He replaces Frederic Desclaux, who was appointed co-head of fixed-income activities for Europe and Asia in September, 2004.

It emerged that Jeremy Elden, head of European oil and gas research at Lehman Brothers, is retiring at the end of February. His responsibilities have been assumed by Lucy Haskins and Tim Whittaker, both longstanding colleagues.

Also understood to be retiring is John Millar, Merrill Lynch's head of equity syndicate for Europe. Millar has spent 15 years at the bank.

Hedge funds beckon

Two of Morgan Stanley's equity sales traders in London left for hedge funds. Des Anderson joined Marshall Wace, a fund with $6.3bn (3.3bn/€4.8bn) in assets under management. Paul Sheppard quit and joined Lansdowne Partners, a fund with more than $4bn in assets under management.

Simon Price was named sole head of equity research for UK and Irish banks at JP Morgan after his colleague and former co-head Stephen Kirk resigned to join Lansdowne Partners too.

In the fund management sector, Craig Brown, former director of institutional business at Deutsche Asset Management, reemerged at HSBC Asset Management where he will head distribution to consultants, multi managers and private banks.

Morley Fund Management hired Angus Scrace from Fidelity Investments as head of strategic consultant relations and John Somers from Invesco Perpetual as head of client communication.

Venture capital: Enterprise finds new captain

Enterprise Ventures, an independent venture capital firm managing 45 million directed to the English regions, boosted its management team. Jonathan Diggines, managing director of Murray Johnstone Private Equity, joined as chief executive. Richard Bamford, a former managing director of the fund, was made executive chairman.
