European Jobs' Roundup: Equities grab the hiring action
Change stimulated hiring in Europe last week, as Merrill Lynch and SG indulged in autumn restructuring. Others filled gaps left by earlier departures.
Merrill Lynch, which is integrating trading and sales-trading for all its equity businesses, hired Rohit D'Souza from Morgan Stanley as head of global equity trading. SG Corporate and Investment Bank combined its three debt origination teams and made Arnaud Achour, previously head of corporate origination, in charge of the whole group. The bank also appointed Stephane Landon and Frederic Desclaux as new joint heads of its fixed income and derivatives business in Europe and Asia.
Fox-Pitt, Kelton continued to make amends for the departure of 10% of its corporate finance team in April, and hired four bankers. Alan Badanes joins as head of the European Insurance team. He ran the European financial institutions group at Chase Manhattan prior to its merger with JP Morgan. Louis d'Alançon joined from Hawkpoint, the UK corporate finance boutique, as head of the France and Benelux team. Markus Wiendieck joined from eSpeed to cover corporate accounts. Enrico Merler joined as a junior investment banker on the Spanish team from PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Milan.
HSBC made two equities appointments. Kevin Bourne, former head of electronic equities trading at Citigroup, joins as global head of equity execution. Mark Ryland joins as head of equity information technology from Merrill Lynch.
Other banking moves included the departure of Jason James, head of global equity strategy at HSBC, for Cambridge University, where he will study for a doctorate on Japanese property tax.
ING Financial Markets hired two senior credit analysts to cover emerging markets and European high yield debt.Pavel Simacek joins from Moodys as a director and senior analyst covering the Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan. Loic de Robert Hauteguere joins from Lazard in New York as a senior analyst covering European high yield.
UBS promoted Ken Costa to chairman of investment banking for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Costa will also continue in his previous role as vice chairman of UBS' global investment banking group. The bank also appointed Russell Chambers, advisor to Tony Blair, as managing director in its UK investment banking business.
Europe's fund managers remained keen hirers last week, particularly in matters related to equities. RCM, the fund management firm owned by Allianz Dresdner Asset Management, hired Jeremy Thomas from Isis Asset Management. Thomas was a senior UK equity manager at Isis. At RCM he will report to Mark Lovett, chief investment officer for UK and European equities.
Schroder Investment Managers hired Allan Conway as head of emerging market equities. Conway joins from West LB where he was head of emerging markets and chief executive of the bank's asset management arm. Conway's arrival follows the departure of two emerging market specialists for RAB Capital earlier last week.
Thames River Capital, a London hedge fund manager, hired Marco Bianchi from Newman & Ragazzi, a rival hedge fund manager, as head of European equity research.
Nordea Investment Management appointed Jan Albers from Baring Asset Management as director of institutional sales with responsibility for developing client relationships and building its business in the German market.
Baring Asset Management made three hires for its small and mid cap team. Nicholas Williams joins from Singer & Friedlander, James Thorne from 3i, and Alisa Craig from Insight Investment. The new hires follow the departure of two Baring fund managers for Fortis Investments in July.
