European Jobs' Roundup: ABN makes equities hires
Banks in Europe were in hiring mode last week, making up for previous losses. ABN Amro was among those recruiting to fill holes left by staff who departed earlier in the year.
The Dutch bank hired four equity analysts. James Williamson and Javier Lastra joined from Societe Generale, Ian Andrews joined from UBS and Nick Moore joined from JP Morgan. Lastra, Williamson and Andrews will focus on beverages equity research, while Moore will focus on mining and metals. The latest appointments follow the appointment of 18 equity sales and research staff at ABN Amro in June after around 30 analysts left earlier in the year.
Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein (DrKW) also filled a gap. The German bank hired Willem Sels, a former executive director at Goldman Sachs, as head of credit strategy. Sels will occupy the position formerly held by Alison Miller, who left for ABN Amro in June.
Other hires last week included JP Morgan's recruitment of two senior government bond traders for its London desk. Michael Serero joined from HSBC as a senior market maker responsible for trading bonds with a 30 year maturity. Mariano Bengoechea joined from CSFB to trade bonds with a maturity of up to five years. Both will be based in London.
Peter Ellis, former managing director of performance and client services at Deutsche Asset Management, joined Investit, an investment management consultancy, where he will look to build the team with external hires.
SG recruited Hero Brahms, former CFO of Linde, the German forklift truck manufacturer, as a senior advisor in Germany. Brahms will advise SG Corporate and Investment Banking and other subsidiaries of the Societe Generale group on their development strategy in the German market.
Bear Stearns hired Chris Wheeler, former head of equities at Fox-Pitt, Kelton. Wheeler joins Bear Stearns' European banks and speciality finance research team, as managing director.
Fortis Investments hired Juan Marin, director general at Invesco Asset Management in Spain. Marin joins Fortis as head of client service and business development for Spain and Latin America.
Northern Trust Global Investments appointed Simon Hutchison as strategist for transition management in Europe. He joins from Instinet, where he was head of UK clients and portfolio trading.
Mark Weinberg stepped down as chairman of St. James's Place Capital. He was replaced by Mike Wilson, joint founder and former chief executive of the group.
Calyon, the investment banking arm of Credit Agricole and Credit Lyonnais, hired Pierre Guillemet as head of IT. Guillemet joins from Euro Security Partners, a joint venture between Credit Agricole and BNP Paribas.
Cantor Fitzgerald hired a 'good portion' of Prebon Yamane's short term interest rate swaps team.
