European Jobs Roundup: More departures at Hermes
It may be the height of the summer holiday but recruiters at Europe's fund managers are still hard at work. Last week they were busy either hiring new staff or shuffling existing ones around.
Northern Trust Global Investments hired Helen Macdonell as a portfolio manager in its active international equity team in London. Macdonell came from Hermes Focus Asset Management, where she was UK investments manager. Last week Hermes lost Peter Butler and Steve Brown, founders of Hermes focus funds.
It also emerged that Alastair Ross Goobey left his post as chairman of Hermes Focus Asset Management in June. Ross Goobey resigned in the wake of scandal surrounding Parmalat, the Italian food conglomerate. His resignation followed a perceived conflict of interest between his role as an advisor at Morgan Stanley, which did several deals with Parmalat, and a board member at Hermes, the largest outside investor in the troubled company.
The European arm of Moore Capital Management, a large US hedge fund business, launched a European recruitment drive. The firm is understood to have already hired 'dozens' of staff for a new office in Mayfair and is hiring across the board including portfolio managers research professionals, and execution professionals.
Barclays Global Investors hired Nick Shellard from Morgan Stanley as business development officer for its European iShares exchange traded funds business.
Insight Investment announced it has hired Matthew Merritt from Citigroup as head of strategy.
SEI Investments, a multi-manager and technology company, appointed Greg Rodgers as director of institutional sales for continental Europe. Rodgers had worked for the firm for a decade.
Key Asset Management appointed Peter Dencik as chief executive. Dencik is a former director and head of institutional business at Singer Friedlander Investment Management. Simon Hawkins from Pavilion Asset Management joined to work on risk and due diligence. Fredrik Johansen joined from Olympia Capital Management as a hedge fund analyst. Morten Kielland, who founded Key and is based in Norway, took over as interim chief invesetment officer (CIO). The new appointments follow several departures from Key during the past year, including its CIO last month.
There were also investment banking moves. Adebayo Ogunlesi, head of investment banking at CSFB, moved to become the bank's chief client officer, a role focused on deal origination. Brady Dougan, the new chief executive of CSFB, will assume the role of head of investment banking until a replacement can be found.
Brunswick UBS , a Russian investment bank, appointed Ed Nicholson as its chief executive. Nicholson was head of Brunswick UBS's equity sales function.
Deutsche Bank poached Einar Johansen from Goldman Sachs as a loans salesman in its debt products division. He will be a director of loan sales and work on the London loan capital markets desk.
Lehman Brothers hired Mike Burton from Goldman Sachs as head of European foreign exchange institutional sales.
