Citigroup - graduate training programme
In addition, the bank has supplied the following information:
Which divisions of the bank hire graduates?
Graduates are recruited into Investment Banking, Equities, Fixed Income, Global Transaction Services, Human Resources, Technology and Operations.
How is the total intake of trainees typically split between each area (eg. 50% corporate finance, 20% sales and trading etc.)?
The split is even across three groups; Investment Banking, Global Treasury Services (GTS) & Technology and the Equities/Fixed Income areas.
Are there any divisions which are likely to hire graduates in 2005, but which didn't hire graduates in 2004 (eg. HR)?
Not at the moment.
How much are graduates paid during training? Do you provide subsidised housing and other perks?
Salaries and benefits are very competitive and in line with other banks in the City.
How long does it take someone to complete your training programme?
Training programmes vary across the different business areas and the duration depends on which business you join. For example, in Technology, there is a 12-month programme, but this is a series of 2 - 5 day courses broken down over the period. In Investment Banking the training is two months, all at the start of the analyst's employment.
Do you guarantee a job upon completion of the programme? Alternatively, are graduates hired on a renewable contract, e.g. for two years?
All of our hires receive permanent contracts.
Where does training take place?
The location of training depends on the business.
What kind of specialist training is offered for each division, e.g. trading, corporate finance, and so on?
Again, due to the varied nature of the businesses we recruit for, the specialist training is different across the programmes. All of our programmes, however, make use of internal and external experts to deliver classroom-based training. In addition, our programmes include professional skills modules to develop abilities such as influencing and team work.
How many hours a day does training last? Will trainees be expected to work or study after hours at home?
Again, this varies by business.
Can trainees move between departments?
Graduates are initially hired to work in one particular division; however, opportunities exist for movement across divisions as careers progress.
What if a graduate trainee wants to do an MBA or MSc in a few years' time? Might the bank provide sponsorship?
Citigroup has a policy for study leave and a number of graduates undertake further education later in their career. Additionally, many study whilst still in full-time employment.
