European jobs roundup: Mediobanca hires in Paris

Mediobanca, the big Italian investment bank, hired five bankers from Citigroup to help set up its first overseas business in Paris. They include Olivier Biraud, who will be head of corporate finance, and investment bankers Yann Lefur and Boris Picchiotino.

Citigroup meanwhile recruited John Michel Steg from Goldman Sachs as a senior managing director in France. Steg will replace Marc Vincent, who left in February to set up the new Mediobanca office. Steg said Citigroup would be recruiting senior bankers.

Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein appointed Vincent Hubert as new head equity capital markets in France. Hubert came from ABN Amro Rothschild, where he held a similar role for the past three years. DrKW said it would hire more equity capital markets staff ahead of expected French privatisations.

Elsewhere Nicola Horlick, the high-profile former chief executive of SG Asset Management, said she was considering setting up a multi-manager boutique. Sources close to her said she might seek up to 20 staff.

Investment banks in Europe meanwhile recruited for everything from equity derivatives to corporate broking.

Merrill Lynch hired four directors and an associate for its corporate equity derivatives team. Jose Luis Albert joined from JP Morgan as deputy head of corporate equity derivatives for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Helene Von Roeder and Glen Fairbairn joined from Deutsche bank, as directors. Philippe Mathieu joined as a director from law firm Cleary Goettlieb Steen & Hamilton. Francesca Pagnoni joined as an associate, from Goldman.

Merrill also made moves to rebuild its corporate broking team after losing five brokers to Morgan Stanley in the last month. A source close to the bank said it had hired Oliver Greaves from UBS and made two other hires. It also emerged that John Dwyer, a director in Merrill's broking operation had left to join Goldman Sachs.

Several former employees of Fox-Pitt, Kelton, the financial services investment bank which has lost some 18 staff over the past month, resurfaced at Keefe Bruyette & Woods. The US bank is setting up a new sales and trading operation with a focus on European financial services companies.

Vasco Moreno, former head of banking research at Fox-Pitt, Kelton, will be director of European research in the new operation.

Lehman Brothers made two senior hires for its equity capital markets division. Scott Ferguson joined from Citigroup, as a managing director with responsibility for financial institutions. Ben Iversen joined from Merrill Lynch as an executive director in the European division.

Deutsche Bank hired three senior people for its private banking division. Martin Keller joined as head of head of global hedge fund investments from Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein. Rami Hayek joined from Barclays Capital as head of equity and fixed income investments. Marco Bizzozero was hired as head of private equity investments. Bizzozero, who will be based in Zurich, joined from LGT Capital Partners, a Swiss alternative investment firm.

Deutsche hired Daniel King from Cazenove to cover the Nordic sector in its European banks research team. It also re-hired Zar Amrolia from Goldman to run global foreign exchange and commodities coverage and head FX global liquidity services..

Atlas Venture, the early stage venture capital firm, made its first IT hire since the end of the tech boom in mid-2000. Fred Destin joined Atlas' London office from Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, where he was a partner in technology investments.

Aspect Capital, a hedge fund manager, hired Roman Pelka from HgCapital and Dominic Steel from ABN Amro. Pelka will head continental European institutional sales and Steel will join as senior research analyst. Aspect said it expected to hire another 10 people this year.

Three former members of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers' global equities team reunited to form a hedge fund, mc2capitalmanagement. Clive Lang, Chris Turner, and Munir Hussain, left MLIM between 2001 and 2002 and said they had been in discussion to set up the business since last year.
