US jobs roundup: Piper Jaffray hires team from Mellon, Barclays bolsters presence
Piper Jaffray, the securities firm, hired 14 sales and trading staff into its fixed income office in New York in the past week.
The team moved from Mellon Financial to join the dealer sales, corporate trading, trading operations and sales teams in Piper Jaffray's Chrysler Building offices in Manhattan.
The hires include Michael Cullen and Jonathan Silverman, who joined as managing directors and senior corporate traders. Among the others were three corporate bond specialists; John Akalski and Paul Gallagher were appointed managing directors while Matt Duffy became an assistant vice president.
Piper Jaffray said the hires would help it serve middle-market clients and corporate bond investors. The company opened its New York trading office in 2002.
Barclays Capital made hires for its real estate, agency, and fixed income businesses.
Michael Mazzei was appointed head of real estate capital markets. He was hired from Lehman Brothers, where he was co-head of real estate investment banking.
Mark Noble also left Lehman to join Barclays as a director and head USD callable agency trader. Noble is one of five additions to Barclays' agency business in its investment banking division. Another is Bob Alter, who moved from BNP Paribas to become a director and senior agency bullet trader.
Barclays Global Investors promoted Peter Knez to the new role of global fixed income chief investment officer. He will look after the growth of the active bond business, principally in the US.
Bank of America hired Kimberly Paparello as a senior investment banker and Francis McKenna as a managing director in its public finance division.
Paparello was director of finance at New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority and moves to Bank of America to expand its national transportation practice. McKenna joins from Merrill Lynch as head of the northeast region public finance division.
Banc of America Securities hired Steven Bayardelle as a managing director and head program trader. He joins from Deutsche Bank Securities where he was a senior program trader.
Banc of America also hired Steve Hellman as a managing director in the general industrial banking team. Hellman was president of OAK Advisory, an advisory firm to the engineering and construction sector.
Deutsche Bank hired Jerrel Armstrong as a director and Asia specialist for west coast sales coverage, based in San Francisco. Armstrong joined from Merrill Lynch where he was a senior Asian salesman.
Devin Murphy left Morgan Stanley to join Deutsche as a managing director and head of real estate, gaming, and lodging investment banking in the Americas. Murphy was a managing director and co-head of US real estate investment banking at Morgan Stanley.
John Galante joined JP Morgan Investor Services as chief technology officer.
Jeffrey Vanderbeek, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers, is leaving to become the main owner and chairman of the New Jersey Devils ice hockey team. Vanderbeek is currently head of global risk management, private equity and strategy and a member of Lehman's executive committee.
Steven Cummings, senior executive vice president at Wachovia, will become sole head of corporate and investment banking, starting in May when Barnes Hauptfuhrer, his current co-head, retires.
Putnam Investments, the fund manager, fired senior executive Karnig Durgarian and three other employees after an internal enquiry uncovered a poor trade that cost a client $1.5m. Durgarian had been at Putnam for 18 years.
Marjorie Gross, senior bond market attorney at JP Morgan, joined The Bond Market Association as a senior vice president and regulatory counsel. Gross had been managing director, associate general counsel and head of debt capital markets for the Americas legal group at JP Morgan Chase.
Richard Ketchum left Citigroup, where he was general counsel of the corporate and investment bank, to be chief regulatory officer of the New York Stock Exchange.
