US jobs round-up: Fund management shake-up
Mercantile Bankshares, a Maryland-based investment group, fired two senior executives last week, while other fund managers hired staff.
John Pileggi, chief executive of investment and wealth management at Mercantile Banksharers, and Michael Donnell, a senior vice president, were sacked after they failed to inform senior managers that Donnell's mother stood to receive a referral fee from an investment advisor working on a fund of funds for the banking group.
Bank of New York hired an investment team from Weiss, Peck & Greer to manage US large cap growth equities for industrial clients. C. Lennis Koontz joined as senior portfolio manager. Yossy Benderly and William Symon were made senior research analysts. Lisa DeNicola-Glicksman and Veronica Mickel were also part of the team move.
Gary Black left Goldman Sachs asset management, where he was chief investment officer, to become president and chief investment officer of Janus Capital Group.
Jeff Larson, a foreign equity money manager at Harvard Management Corp., which manages endowment funds for Harvard University, left to set up an asset management firm in Boston, taking his team of 14 with him. The new company, Sowood Capital Management, will run a hedge fund and commodity fund with $700m from Harvard University's $19.3 billion endowment.
Ed Robertiello left Blackstone to join Asset Alliance, an alternative asset manager. Robertiello becomes senior managing director of investments and research, overseeing hedge fund strategy, replacing Jeff Moses who is now at Bear Stearns. Alberto Santulin, a vice president at Blackstone, replaced Robertiello as a managing director there.
Barclays Capital made four hires in its compliance division. Carol Burnet, from Credit Suisse First Boston, and Doug Freedman, from UBS, were made directors. Brian Charikofsky left Salomon Smith Barney and Lisle Brathwaite left JP Morgan Chase to take on associate director roles at Barclays.
Ken Moelis will replace Roy Tapner at UBS as joint global head of investment banking. Moelis, formerly head of investment banking in the Americas at UBS, will remain in Los Angeles. UBS hired James Glerum, from CSFB, to head a new division in its global industrial group.
Carlos Conde resurfaced in New York at Harris Nesbitt, the US investment and corporate banking arm of BMO Financial Group, as head of its US equity capital markets group. Conde is the former head of equity capital markets at SG Corporate and Investment Banking.
Stephan Gallagher, head of global high grade credit trading at Banc of America Securities, was hired by Wachovia as a managing director and co-head of investment grade credit trading.
Miller Buckfire Lewis Ying, a US restructuring boutique, hired Michael Wildish to provide M&A advice in the firm's strategic advisory practice. Wildish was most recently managing director responsible for new product development at Capital Markets Services.
After six years at CSFB, Leslie Pfrang rejoined Deutsche Bank as head of technology sales for North America.
