Jobs roundup: hiring spree continues at Barclays Capital and RBS.
The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Barclays Capital were among the main hirers last week.
RBS continued its capital markets recruitment drive, adding two to its leveraged finance sales and origination team in London, bringing the team up to eight.
Barclays Capital took on three senior staff. In the US, it hired Jonathan Shiff from UBS Investment Bank for its corporate risk management team. In London, it added two staff: an associate director to its inflation linked research team, and a new head of energy research.
Since late July, Barclays Capital has also added a director and three sales staff to its foreign exchanger (FX) team, three people to its asset backed debt team in New York, two telecoms bankers, and a mortgage securitisation specialist. The bank posted a record level of income in the first half of this year.
Upgrading and expansion in private equity and capital markets were also distinguishing features of last week's investment banking job market.
Private equity may be only just emerging from the doldrums of the first half of 2003, but a spate of hiring in the Nordic region continued. Nordic Capital added a new member to its team. Christian Dyvig, former head of M&A at Morgan Stanley's Frankfurt and Nordic offices, will join the firm as its seventh partner.
In the US, Standard Life Investments, the fund management arm of the insurer Standard Life, continued its push into the difficult North American private equity market, hiring John Guinee from State Street. Standard Life poached Dan Cahill, also from State Street, to set up a Boston private equity office earlier this year. Cahill has plans to hire one more investment professional to the team.
In capital markets, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein (DrKW) boosted its team with two hires: a director for equity capital markets in its Frankfurt office, and a new global head of equity linked origination. The additions mean DrKW will have hired four staff in equity capital markets since John St. John joined the bank as global head of equity capital markets in June.
There was poaching in private banking and technology investment banking. Schroders Private Bank lured four people from Kleinwort Benson Private Bank for its structured products area. Banc of America Securities poached Paul Phillips from Goldman Sachs to become global head of technology investment banking.
