Banking keeps its glitter

A total of 13% of 7,000 students in Europe chose the profession as one of their three top career choices, down from 15% last year, the report by Universum survey company said. Management consulting was most popular, at 23%, while 16% chose marketing and advertising.

Among the 900 students who wanted to be bankers, Goldman Sachs was the most popular potential employer. A total of 27% named the US investment bank as one of their five preferred employers, while JP Morgan was second at 20.4%.

Morgan Stanley was chosen by 15.1%, Deutsche Bank 14.6%, Merrill Lynch 13.7%, UBS 12.8% and Citigroup 11.9%. The other high scorers were Credit Suisse First Boston at 9.8% and ABN Amro at 7.4%.

More than 70% of those wanting to be bankers were men. The survey polled business, engineering and science students at 81 universities and colleges.
