Day in the Life: Philip Rose, fund manager

All members of the UK team engage in fundamental research. Rose is responsible for several sectors including pharmaceuticals and transport.

0645: I am a very reluctant morning person and nearly always have to debate with myself the merits of leaving behind a warm duvet.

First priority for the day is a bowl of muesli, followed by a quick shower and then off to the office. One of the nicest changes about living and working in Edinburgh is that I have replaced my long commute into London with a short walk through the Meadows, a rather green and pleasant part of town.

0745:My first task is to run through the results for the day - on this occasion I'm attempting to disaggregate just how much money BA has managed to lose this year and its expectations for recovery.

While the document is seemingly endless, it is important to dig through the numbers and footnotes because - as with any announcement - this is where the interesting bits will be.

Then it is on to the phones. Kate at Goldmans is back, having been laid low with the flu, while the rather chirpy Charlotte at Merrills has returned from Spain. They fill me in with their own perspectives on what is happening across the market as well as on significant corporate or economic news in the US, which will invariably affect our own domestic market too.

This sets me up for our morning team meeting, which starts with our dealers and their market impressions before moving on to company announcements and results.

It also gives us a chance to talk through what's on today and which companies are in to see us - plus sharing our findings from previous company meetings. Since it's Monday, we also do a quick preview of the forthcoming week and the changes of the past week, assessing what impact these may have on our portfolio strategies.

1000: I have a lunchtime meeting with First Group to prepare for, but must also tie up the loose ends on an EasyJet financial model.

At SWIP, we engage in fundamental company research that involves analysing company financial statements and reports before constructing our own financial models for the next five years. To avoid bland research that simply assumes flat growth rates and contains little original thought, we have to dig quite deeply.

My timing has worked out quite well with this latest piece of research, since EasyJet has just confirmed the purchase of Go - subject to a rights issue.

With a beach holiday fast approaching, I am also on a low fat diet and have had to trade my morning supplement of Kit Kats and Yorkies for carrots and Big Softie fruit bars! Next I retrieve my model of First Group - reacquainting myself with my expectations for the company and the key areas about which I will need to question the management team.

1230: My first comment to First Group's CEO Moir Lockhead concerns my personal contribution to operational gearing on the railways, having had the pleasure of standing all the way to Liverpool Street on one of his trains last week.

There are more serious issues to be talked through as well, especially with the current concerns over railway safety, before coming to other key topics such as refranchising.

First Group is also trying to introduce yellow school buses to the UK, as typically seen in the US. Unfortunately, they were not counting on EU regulations, which make this standard vehicle several times more expensive over here.

1430:The rest of the afternoon is spent finishing my updated EasyJet-Go model and checking the numbers still add up. I also get back on the phone, talking to a chemicals industry consultant with regard to another recent model.

We have been keen to develop sources of industry expertise outside of the investment community, because they tend to have fewer corporate broking relationships to worry about! Then it's onto the internet looking for data on the corporate jet market to back up some other growth assumptions that I have made in this particular model.

1900: Now it's off to the gym to finish the day I am working hard to &quotfinetune" my physique in preparation for wowing the Italians in a couple of weeks. Having almost collapsed on a series of exercise machines, I am ready for a nice hot shower.

2100: After a call to my girlfriend Gemma it's time for dinner, which, in anticipation of my holiday, is cooked in my new George Foreman grill - it's my latest toy and gives you healthy fat-drained food. Finally, I put my feet up to watch Jean Claude Van Damme punishing a few bad guys for messing with him. It's a cathartic way to end another day.
