Fortune favours Morgan Stanley and ING Barings
Morgan Stanley's London staff like the large deals the firm handles, as well as its two health clubs, hairdresser, dry cleaner and increasing flexibility of working hours, the poll revealed.
In Amsterdam, ING Barings staff cited the impressive architecture of their offices, natural lighting and a 'family' atmosphere - including free Easter eggs personally delivered by the chairman, Ewald Kist.
The poll, the first by Fortune in Europe, did not rank the firms in order of merit. Its annual poll about US employers does, however, and this year's best company to work for was the stockbroker Edward Jones.
The recipe behind its success was simple: despite difficult markets, none of its 27,000 employees was made redundant in the past year, and bonuses were paid a week early to help brokers suffering from the downturn in trading.
Goldman Sachs was the only investment bank to make it into the US top 100 companies, dropping four places from last year to 19th. It earned plaudits for a $10 million donation to World Trade Centre relief efforts, and for a claim by 95% of employees that co-workers will "give extra to get the job done".
