UK firms follow US share trend

The requirement is becoming more common, with eight firms introducing such a shareholding policy this year alone.

William M Mercer said the firms were following a US trend designed to improve company performance by aligning directors' interests more closely with those of shareholders.

'Shareholding policies help counter the claims that option plans are a one-way bet and that executives can't lose,' said a William M Mercer spokesperson.
